1 Year Post Operation!

It's been an entire year since my surgery! I can't believe it's been that long already. My nose is totally healed up. It's not sensitive to cold nor does it feel "stiff" anymore and all the swelling is gone. It was pretty well healed after 6 months. For awhile I thought I might have nerve damage because it was so stiff and it wasn't that sensitive to touch but it just takes a long, long, long time to heal.

If you're wondering how long I felt like it took to heal, I'd say 9 months to a year, no joke. You can't speed up the healing process it's just how long it takes. I'm still very glad I got the surgery.

Feel free to ask any questions if you haven't found answers in my blog!

    1. Nasal drip was worse for a few months following surgery but I always have it. I'm not sure if it's from surgery or allergies.

    1. I continued to use it for a few months after and anytime it felt too dry. Colorado is has no humidity so I use it during summer mostly.

  8. Hi Erica, i have just read yr blog, well i had the same surgery on 5/01/2014, but what i want to know is that, have you experience tingling on the nose, dizziness and occasional headache after the surgery

    1. I absolutely did. The headaches let up about a month after and the tingling would come and go for about 6 months. The headaches, I'm assuming, are from the tools and trauma to the nasal region and the tingling would be nerves healing.

    3. If you had your surgery almost 2 months ago I would ask your ENT doc. I was feeling much better at that point. I was fatigued and tired but it went away after a month. I know my teeth were really sensitive after my surgery for a few months, which is just the nerve thing again.

  9. Hi Erika,
Just discovered your blog. Three weeks ago I had my surgery done and I'm not sleeping very well. The doctor says it's normal and that I will start breathing properly within 4-6 weeks after the surgery. How was your experience? When did you start feeling changes in your sleep? Thank you!

    1. Hey Carlos,
I had problems sleeping for about 2 months after surgery. Every week was better and better but you're in the clear now! 3 weeks post surgery I felt like I was starting to be myself again. I was taking some sleeping pills (or ZZZquil) to try and get a few solid hours of sleep. Your doctor is right, just keep strong.

  11. Hi Erika,

I have just found your blog 5 days after my septoplasty operation and I wanted to say Thank You for posting as it has helped me through my "hell" day and reminded me that the swelling on my nose will eventually go down and I will be able to laugh and smile without a stabbing pain going through my nose when someone makes me laugh or smile!

  12. How long did it take for your senses to go back to normal? I'm at day 6. Doing very well, actually. Headaches, teeth sensitivity, earaches, and sore throat are improving each day. My appetite however...still waiting on that to improve. Doc said it's due to decreased sense of smell and taste (which is normal). They didn't say how long it may last though.
Lastly, did you use a scarf when you went outside to keep the muck in the air out of your nose until it healed?
    What was your experience?
I'm glad all is well for you now. Your pics look great. I am not taking pics any time soon though. Lol!!

  13. I had my septoplasty on March 18 2017. It's been 6 months but my right nose is still always blocked. Do you face similar kind of problem? How long did it take for swelling to subside completely

    1. It took a year for swelling to subside completely! Is your right side completely blocked? I know at 6 months I definitely was able to use and breathe from it. My right nostril never became like the left side; I'd say about 30-40% air flow reduction compared to the left.

  14. Hi Erica! It's been 9/10 months since I had my nose surgery. My left nostril was block prior to the surgery but now it's fine after the surgery. However, the area in my right nostril seems to be less spacious than the one on the left when I stick my pinkie in there. I did go back to see my doctor and he said that it won't be 100% perfect. He also seemed a bit offended when I went back and asked questions about why this is the case. His response was 'You can do the surgery again if you'd like'. Any suggestions or reasoning why this could be the case?

    1. I also noticed that my other nostril space got smaller after surgery. I can only speculate, but I would think it's just normal from surgery; perhaps scar tissue or not evenly spaced septum. Just like your doctor said, nothing will be 100%. If it doesn't impact your nose-related activities then accept it as a new quirk of your body :)

  15. Hi Erica, I notices my other nostril space got smaller. How do you deal with this when breathing?

  16. Hi Erica, I'm 2 months post septoplasty and my problem is that there seems to be constant phlegm at the back of my nose and throat which I cannot clear it. Do you remember if you had a similar problem? I hope it's part of a normal process of healing! Thank you!!

    1. If I remember correctly, I did have to carry around tissues because I felt like I was hacking up stuff for a long while. I know that for the first 6 months following surgery, my allergies and any nasal related sickness felt extra phlegmy. I hope you're healing up quickly!

    2. Thank you so much Erica for your reply. I feel so much better now! So this should be a kind of post op adjusting. I'm happy that all the healing is behind you and you're moving on your life! I hope to be where you are right now soon! Love your beautiful pics!!
